good morning/afternoon/evening to mr.____(your teacher's name) and my friends.

i would like to introduce you a short novel named “the old man and the sea”.

it is written by ernest hemingway in cuba in 1951 and published in 1952.

the story of an aging, life-long fisherman who attempts to find himself, and hopefully a fish, on a fishing trip in the gulf waters off cuba.

after spending most of his life alone and losing his only companion who is a young cuban boy, the old man heads out to sea once again.

his 84 days without a notable catch end on this trip, but will he be able to defeat the odds after catching a gigantic marlin?

this short novel is universal in its consideration of the plight of an old man struggling against age, loneliness, mortality, humility and poverty to maintain his identity and dignity. apart from that, the cheerful and optimistic old man wants to reestablish his reputation in the community. besides, he also wants to ensure for all time his relationship with those he loves and to whom he hopes to paon everything he values the most. finally, he survives and wins the battle. this has shown his heroic struggle not only redeems himself but also inspires and spiritually enriches those around him.

my dream

everyone has his own dream, which can be realized or not and which can be different from time to time. however, there must be a long –term one in one’s mind. in other words, it is not easy to be realized. i have a dream: to pass cet-6 before i graduate from the university. it’s maybe easy for most of my classmates, but to me it is as difficult as cracking the hardest nut in the world. i have been studying english for about 10 years. it should not be the no.1 task in my university agenda, but too many failures forced me to do so. i entered one of the most famous universities in china with the almost lowest english mark among all my students. i was really disappointed about that.although i was not good at english when i was in the middle school, it was not at least about the average. i had no strength to face the frustration. after a semester’s study i was the lowest indeed. i have never cried for study before, but this time i shed tears. since then i made up my mind to pass cet-6 before my graduation.

glanced back to my english studying experience, i realized that interest is one of the key factors to grasp knowledge. i study english only for the examination before, but not the language itself. that is the weakest point of me. i must overcome it so as to realize my dream. i made a plan: read one story until i can recite it each day; listen to the tapes related to the books as well. english is not so disgusting for me now. i will persist in doing so even after i pass cet-6. i wish my english would be as good as my native language in the future.

we are the world ,we are the future

someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”。 i don?t know who wrote these words, but i?ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be. we are all in the position of the farmers. if we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest. if we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all.

we are young. “how to spend the youth?” it is a meaningful

question. to answer it, first i have to ask“what do you understand by the word youth?” youth is not a time of life, it?s a state of mind. it?s not a matter ofrosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees. it?s the matter of the will. it?s the freshness of the deep spring oflife.

youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over

timidity of the appetite , for adventure over the love of ease. this often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20 。 nobody grows old merely by a number of years 。 we grow old by deserting our ideals. years wrinkle the skin , but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul 。 worry , fear , self –distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust 。

whether 6[www.chayi5.com]0 of 16 , there is in every human being ?s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing childlike appetite of what?s next and the joy of the game of living 。 in the center of your heart and my heart there?s a wireless station : so long as it receives messages ofbeauty , hope ,cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long as you are young 。

a poet said “to see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.several days ago, i had a chance to listen to a lecture. i learnt a lot there. i?d like to share it with all of you. let?s show our right palms. we can see three lines that show how our love.career and life is. i have a short line of life. what about yours? i wondered whether we could see our future in this way. well, let?s make a fist. where is our future? where is our love, career, and life? tell me.yeah, it is in our hands. it is held in ourselves.

we all want the future to be better than the past. but the future can go better itself. don?t cry because it is over, smile because it happened. from the past, we?ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher. we?ve learnt that we can?t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it. failure doesn?t mean you don?t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way. failure doesn?t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder.

as what i said at the beginning, “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”。 the past has gone. nothing we do will change it. but the future is in front of us. believe that what we give to the world, the world will give to us. and from today on, let?s be the owners of ourselves, and speak out “we are the world, we are the future.”

a careless word may kindle strife; a cruel word may wreck a life; a timely word may level stress; a loving word may heal and bless.

the happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything they just make the most of everything that comes along their way.

love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, ends with a tear. when you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. live your life so that when you die, you're the one smiling and everyone around you is crying.

there was once a guy who suffered from cancer, a cancer that can?'t be cured. he was 18 years old and he could die anytime. all his life, he was stuck in his house being taken cared by his mother. he never went outside but he was sick of staying home and wanted to go out for once. so he asked his mother and she gave him permission.

he walked down his block and found a lot of stores. he passed a cd store and looked through the front door for a second as he walked. he stopped and went back to look into the store. he saw a beautiful girl about his age and he knew it was love at first sight. he opened the door and walked in, not looking at anything else but her. he walked closer and closer until he was finally at the front desk where she sat.

she looked up and asked, “can i help you?”

she smiled and he thought it was the most beautiful smile he has ever seen before and wanted to kiss her right there.

he said, “uh… yeah… umm… i would like to buy a cd.”

he picked one out and gave her money for it.

"would you like me to wrap it for you?” she asked, smiling her cute smile again.

he nodded and she went to the back. she came back with the wrapped cd and gave it to him. he took it and walked out of the store.

helping every american with autism achieve their full potential is one of this administration’s top priorities. at the u.s. department of health and human services, we continue to strive to meet the complex needs of all people with autism spectrum disorders (asd) and their families. while there is no cure, early intervention is critical and can greatly improve a child’s development.

perhaps the biggest step we’ve taken to support those affected by autism and their families happened over a year ago, with the signing of the affordable care act. now, new insurance plans are required to cover autism screening and developmental assessments for children at no cost to parents. insurers will also no longer be allowed to deny children coverage for a pre-existing condition such as asd or to set arbitrary lifetime or annual limits on benefits.

also, thanks to the new law, young adults are allowed to stay on their family health insurance until they turn 26. for a young adult with autism spectrum disorder and their family, that means peace of mind. it means more flexibility, more options, and more opportunity to reach their full potential.

the marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.

ultimately, there is more support for americans with autism than ever before. this means more promise of new breakthroughs that will help us understand autism even better. but in order to continue meeting the needs of people with autism, the combating autism act must be fully reauthorized. we still have a long way to go. working collaboratively with important partners, the affordable care act and the combating autism act will allow us to continue important research and develop and refine vital treatments.

there are still many unknowns. however, one thing is certain. we will continue to work harder than ever to find solutions and provide support to individuals with asd and their families. together, we can help reduce disparities and allow everyone to actualize their greatest potential.

kathleen sebelius is secretary of health and human services.
